This means that Alex also learns the truth. By the end, we learn what’s real and what existed only in Alex’s mind down to the smallest details we wouldn’t have thought to question. That said, I do want to acknowledge that Zappia wraps up the novel rather cleanly. In the process, we come a little closer to understanding what it would be like to be unable to discern what’s real and what isn’t real. On the one hand, I love the complexity that Zappia creates by intertwining reality and delusions so that we, the readers, finds ourselves questioning everything that we’re told. Made You Up is a mind boggling read.Īlex’s unreliable narration is both the charm and the major flaw of this novel. I would think that Alex perceives reality only to later question it only to later question my doubts. Made You Up is a novel that will make you question everything that you see.

I never questioned if it was real or not.

That first lobster scene is so cute, so precious, so full of feels. This article appeared in The Ticket, a 2015 special publication.I fell in love with Made You Up from the time lobsters were first mentioned. Good morning and a happy book birthday to fellow Hoosier on her first novel, MADE YOU UP, which I’m super excited to read. Yeah, the day came out, he just said, like, “Happy book birthday.” That was really cool. IM: He gave you a shout-out on Twitter once, didn’t he? IM: You’ve been called the next John Green. That’s what I did, and that worked out pretty well for me. But most people get their agents by just emailing out cover letters and manuscripts. It might have been better if I had been able to go to a lot of writing conferences and book conferences-we don’t have very many of those here. IM: Was it hard to find an agent while living in Indy?Īctually, the living-in-Indiana thing didn’t affect it that much.

And I like anime, and a lot of people have been saying that the beginning of Made You Up kind of reminds them of an anime show. Like for me, I read Harry Potter a bunch of times when I was growing up, and that’s how I learned to write characters. I think for any writer, it’s kind of a combination of all the things you like. IM: How did you develop your writing style? People who went to Franklin Central will read the books and be like, “Oh, yeah, I know this.” But they were kind of based off of my hometown and, like, the schools I went to. The town that “Alex” lives in and both of the high schools that she went to, they’re all made up. Mostly just the south side of Indianapolis, because that’s where I’ve lived my whole life. Zappia, 22, is fresh out of college-and hot off the presses with a widely acclaimed debut novel, Made You Up, that explores teen schizophrenia. Hey, John Green, there’s a new young-adult lit phenom in town.
